Two classics in Darien’s two greatest venues

We’re lucky in Darien to have great town parks, Weed Beach and Tilley Pond Park, on Long Island Sound and in suburban setting so close together.  A reason we put on Darien Summer Nights is to acknowledge what a great town Darien is and how fortunate we are to be here.

For August, we have two classics in these two great venues.  Our musical act is Leslie Costa and our movie is Barefoot in the Park, with Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.

Leslie will perform at Weed Beach on August 8th starting at 5:00 pm (no beach permit required after 4:30 pm) and also before the movie at Tilley Pond Park on August 14th at 6:30 pm.  Leslie fell in love with guitar, after her cousin, Chris, let her try his 1969 Fender Stratocaster.  She formed her own band in 1990 called Leslie Costa and the Usual Suspects.  Her contemporaries include artists like: Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, Melissa Etheridge, Sheryl Crow, Counting Crowes and Natalie Merchant.

She attracted the attention of Seymour Stien of Sire Records and Bob Krasnow of Elektra Records and released two CD’s, Mission Bell and September Rain  The latter was voted the #1 song by the Fairfield Advocate from a local artist the year of it’s release.

Barefoot in the Park is the Robert Redford and Jane Fonda classic about two newlyweds getting started and living in New York.  It’s a great movie featuring two of Hollywood’s biggest stars just before their careers really started to take off.

Which reminds me of another reason I feel lucky to be in Darien – proximity to the city.  The movie starts at 8:30 in Tilley Pond Park after Leslie’s performance.

Wow!  I can’t believe how young Redford and Fonda look in this movie.  See for yourself in the trailer below and on August 14th with the whole movie.
